Young attorney of the year specializes in trust industry

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Jordan Veurink, an associate attorney at Ballard Spahr LLP and the 2018 South Dakota Young Lawyer of the Year by the State Bar of South Dakota.

Name: Jordan Veurink

Age: 31

Hometown: Platte

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

I visited Sioux Falls often while growing up, but it really became “home” while I attended the University of Sioux Falls. After attending law school out of state for a few years, my wife and I didn’t think twice about coming back to raise our family.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

I’ve never considered leaving Sioux Falls, but I’ve stayed because I have family and friends living in the area, I have a great career here, the trust industry, and the opportunity to experience all of those things in a small city with so many amenities.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

My colleagues, who are as fun and interesting as they are talented, and the challenges of helping clients navigate difficult situations and the satisfaction of finding solutions.

How did you get connected to your industry?

I graduated with degrees in criminal justice and sociology but wasn’t sure what career path to take, so I applied to law school. Despite having the criminal justice background, I became more interested in trusts, estates and tax while in law school and focused my studies on those areas. Fortunately, when I graduated law school, my firm, then known as Lindquist & Vennum LLP,  was looking for a trusts and estates attorney, hired me and the rest is history. With the strong trust industry in South Dakota and the growth of Sioux Falls, practicing in these areas has been exceptionally rewarding.

Describe Ballard Spahr in three words.

Depth, expertise, strength.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

Chick-fil-A. All things considered, it’s shocking they haven’t made it to Sioux Falls yet!

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I see myself as a partner at Ballard Spahr, continuing to serve my clients, growing my practice and advancing my knowledge of my areas of expertise.
