Aug. 16, 2022

A 200-foot crane tipped over this morning at The Steel District construction site in downtown Sioux Falls.

It happened about 7:30 a.m. on the north end of the site as the crane was lifting a precast column at a nine-story office tower under construction as part of the multiuse development, according to a statement from developer and general contractor Lloyd Cos.

No one was injured in the incident and Lloyd Cos. said it is continuing to investigate the incident alongside local authorities.

“What’s most important to us is that no one was injured and all will go home safe tonight,” said Jake Quasney, chief operating officer for Lloyd Cos. “We are working diligently with the team to secure the site and move forward safely.”

The office tower is one of multiple buildings at The Steel District. The parking ramp is finished, and a building that will wrap around it is under construction for retail shops, apartments and condominiums. The Canopy by Hilton hotel is just starting its work.

The office tower will include three restaurants from a Twin Cities operator on the ground floor.
