Accountant turned attorney finds family, career fit in Sioux Falls

Feb. 26, 2019

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Joseph Hogue, an associate attorney at Cutler Law Firm.

Name: Joseph P. Hogue

Age: 41

Hometown: Sloan, Iowa

What brought you to Sioux Falls: In 2013, my family moved to Sioux Falls from Muskegon, Mich. My wife and I were both at a good transition point in our professional lives, and we wanted to move back closer to our families since we had two young sons. Sioux Falls was a nice compromise between Sloan and Phillip, S.D., where my wife’s family is, and we were both able to find jobs!

What keeps you in Sioux Falls: Sioux Falls is a great place to live and raise a family. We love the school system and the numerous activities for our sons, now 9 and 6. We also like all of the opportunities to get involved in the community.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

I think the most enjoyable thing about the practice of law is that there are new challenges every day. With my practice in particular, I have many opportunities to help people with their businesses, and it is very satisfying when I am able to be with a client every step of the way through a problem – from identification to resolution.

How did you get connected to your industry?

Prior to becoming an attorney, I worked for 10 years as a CPA for a large global accounting firm. This gave me a good base in understanding client service and professionalism, as well as what makes businesses tick. As an attorney, I try to stay current with my legal knowledge and legal industry trends by attending relevant seminars and participating in online webinars. Additionally, I try to stay connected to the Sioux Falls business community by attending events put on by the chamber and by my clients and others in my professional network.

Describe Cutler Law Firm in three words.

Timely. Quality. Pragmatic.

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

I have been a volunteer youth basketball coach for a dozen years, mostly through the YMCA. During that span, I have had the privilege of coaching kids from first to sixth grade. I really enjoy teaching kids the fundamentals of basketball while encouraging them to not lose sight of the fact that basketball is supposed to be fun! Every season, my hope is that I can be a positive influence in the lives of my players, as well as their families.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

I think it would be really cool if we could get a WNBA franchise in Sioux Falls. I think the community would fully embrace the team, and I believe that it could pave the way for other high-level sporting events, which in turn could pique the interests of other non-sport national organizations in general.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I hope to continue to grow as a business attorney and to become a partner at Cutler Law Firm. Further, I hope to continue my involvement with Volunteers of America, Dakotas and to take on additional leadership roles with the board. Outside of work, I anticipate my weekends and evenings being spent at various school and extracurricular activities.
