Affordable housing planned for former Bowden Youth Center

Aug. 6, 2019

A 35-unit apartment project is being planned for the property that used to be the Bowden Youth Center.

The building at 430 W. 11th St. would be demolished, and a new building would be constructed on the property.

“These apartments will help address the need for affordable housing in the city,” said Mike Crane, director of affordable housing for the project’s developer, Lloyd Cos.

The three-story building would be a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments.

The project will require rezoning by the city and tax credit support from the South Dakota Housing Authority. Lloyd also is in the process of requiring a small amount of parking from the nearby YMCA to help meet the parking needs of the project.

The Bowden Youth Center moved to 1309 W. 51st St. in 2018. The 1937 building originally was Irving School.
