Airport board approves plan to add up to 8 gates

Nov. 21, 2022

The Sioux Falls Airport Authority has agreed on a long-range plan to add up to eight gates at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport.

On this map, “A” is the first phase of expansion, and “B” is the second. Orange represents the existing concourse.

Phase one of an expansion would close off gates one and three and add up to six gates to the south as part of a concourse expansion that also would include more space for concessions and lounge seating.

A closer look at what’s proposed for phase one.

A future expansion to the existing concourse would replace the original gates lost during the prior phase of construction by building four or five more, bringing the airport’s total to 15 gates.

A closer look at phases one and two

There currently are seven gates with the ability to park up to 10 aircraft overnight.

Phase one is estimated to cost $128 million, and phase two is estimated at $44 million.

Construction of the first phase probably wouldn’t begin until 2025-26, depending on funding, airport executive director Dan Letellier said.

“Construction costs for terminal and airport facilities has skyrocketed in the past four to five years,” he said. “We would need to secure sources of funding from federal, state and local governments to assist with such an undertaking along with airport financing.”

According to a state of South Dakota study conducted in 2020, the Sioux Falls Regional Airport has an annual economic impact to the Sioux Falls area of more than $400 million, he said.

“We recognize the growth in population and business to the area and want to ensure our airport keeps pace with our forecasted increase in passengers and flight operations.”
