Amazon to begin Sioux Falls fulfillment center operation ‘in a few weeks’

Sept. 22, 2022

Amazon plans to begin initial operations at its new Sioux Falls fulfillment center in the next few weeks, ramping up and launching into next year.

A statement from regional spokesman Scott Seroka confirmed the update.

“We are now hiring for various jobs at this facility – all of which offer at least $15.50 per hour and comprehensive benefits,” he said.

In June, Amazon announced the facility would open later than planned but didn’t give a timeline.

The nearly 3-million-square-foot facility at Foundation Park in northwest Sioux Falls was about 95 percent done with construction in February when community and business leaders toured it.

At that time, it was waiting on equipment, including conveyor systems, that was expected to be installed in the next 90 days.

The five-story building is expected to support about 1,000 full-time jobs.

“I’m very excited they decided to move forward,” said Bob Mundt, CEO of the Sioux Falls Development Foundation. “We’re happy to have them as a corporate citizen and we’re looking forward to growing and expanding that operation.”

At one point, Amazon had said it planned to open this year. The plan was to post management job openings 120 days ahead of opening and the rest of the positions 90 days ahead of time.

Across the country, other new Amazon fulfillment centers also had delayed openings — including some into 2024.

Amazon already is operating a delivery station in Sioux Falls, with growing volume. It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 800 E. 60th St. N., employing more than 250 part-time employees plus additional delivery drivers who work for two contracted services.
