Amazon to buy Whole Foods

From staff reports

E-commerce giant Amazon is acquiring Whole Foods Market.

The deal, valued at $13.7 billion, is expected to strengthen Amazon’s presence in the grocery market.

Whole Foods’ John Mackey will remain CEO, and the store will continue to operate under the Whole Foods name.

“This partnership presents an opportunity to maximize value for Whole Foods Market’s shareholders, while at the same time extending our mission and bringing the highest quality, experience, convenience and innovation to our customers,” Mackey said in a statement.

Amazon has been trying to grow its online grocery business. Walmart added online ordering in recent months, including at two Sioux Falls stores, and Hy-Vee has offered online pickup and delivery for more than a year.
