Oct. 15, 2019

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Matthew J. Abel, an attorney at Goosmann Law Firm.

Name: Matthew J. Abel

Age: 32

Hometown: Marshall, Minn.

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

To attend Augustana University.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

My wife and I love what Sioux Falls has to offer for both of our careers and for our children.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

I enjoy helping people navigate the often foreign and complicated legal process during one of their most difficult periods of life – following the passing of a loved one.

How did you get connected to your industry?

I took introductory law classes in college and then interned with the Minnehaha County State’s Attorney’s Office, which is where I made the decision that I wanted to become an attorney. Through that internship and my subsequent time at the University of South Dakota School of Law, I made connections with practitioners from all over the state – many of which I still have today.

Describe Goosmann Law in three words.

Progressive, innovative and focused.

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

I enjoy participating in local pro bono legal clinics for veterans.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

I would like to see a local business that focuses on providing healthy, daily, in-office catering for other businesses in which its employees want to continue working while taking more frequent, shorter breaks to eat.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

As a leader at Goosmann Law Firm, helping to grow and drive it into the forefront of the South Dakota legal market.
