Avera leader who relocated from Denver enjoys driving innovation — and driving less

March 5, 2019

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Jordan Anderson, vice president of sales and account management at Avera Health Plans.

Name: Jordan Anderson

 Age: 38

 Hometown: Red Wing, Minn.

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

I had a terrific opportunity to further my career with Avera Health Plans as the vice president of sales and account management. Prior to September 2018, I had been in Denver for eight years. My wife and I being parents of two young girls – 5 and 1 – wanted to get back to the Midwest, and Sioux Falls specifically, because of the amazing health care industry, tremendous schools, lifestyle and to be closer to both of our families.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

The people. Everyone has been so welcoming and supportive of me and my family. It also doesn’t hurt that my commute time has decreased considerably from what it was in Denver.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

The opportunity to support the needs of the community and drive innovative solutions for our members today and in the future. That is what gets me out of bed each and every day.

How did you get connected to your industry?

I had the opportunity to become a financial underwriter with UnitedHealthcare right out of college. Since then, I’ve been very fortunate in my career in having many great mentors that have challenged me to grow and further develop in the various roles that I have held.

Describe Avera in three words.

Innovation. Hospitality. Humble.

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

Time and energy. Volunteering has always been a big part of my life from when I was young. With the tremendous number of well-run nonprofit organizations in Sioux Falls, I am excited to get involved!

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

The next small business that opens in Sioux Falls. I enjoy seeing the creativity that small-business owners bring to their communities. Sioux Falls certainly has its fair share of businesses that offer unique and personalized services, and I would like to see that trend continue.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Personally: Cheer competitions, hockey rinks, soccer fields, dance recitals and likely less hair. Professionally: I don’t see myself anywhere other than with Avera in five years. With so many changes taking place in the health care industry today, it will be exciting to be a part of that journey. It is difficult to say what my role might be in five years, but as long as there is an opportunity to positively impact the health of individuals and communities – I will be a part of it!
