Boutique owner to close store, focus on mobile Western shop

Jan. 18, 2024

The Posh Cowgirl is becoming the face of Posh Boutique with the upcoming closure of the longtime store at The Bridges at 57th.

Owner Alyssa Nix launched the mobile Western boutique in the summer of 2023, combining her two loves: fashion and horses. Since then, she has been selling a mix of traditional Posh styles with Western apparel and accessories at rodeos, horse shows and other events while continuing to operate the boutique, which she bought in 2018.

Brick-and-mortar retail, however, has had its challenges, Nix noted.

“It’s kind of sad because it’s the end of an era for Posh,” she said of the business that was founded in 2008. “I definitely appreciate all the support over the years.”

While the store will close at the end of the month, The Posh Cowgirl will move into a new warehouse near the Tea exit for Interstate 29 that will provide a home for the trailer, an inventory processing area and space for shopping by appointment or for events and private parties like bridal showers and bachelorette parties.

“It’s going to be a Posh warehouse, so it’s going to be adorable,” Nix said.

The warehouse is at 2015 Merchant St., Suite 2, in the Bakker Landing development, which includes businesses such as Casey’s, Ideal Tent & Event Rentals and the future Down Home by DeBoers.

During the winter when The Posh Cowgirl is operating out of the warehouse, Nix said it might be more convenient for shoppers to schedule a time to try on clothes rather than following traditional store hours.

“If they want to wait until the kids are in bed and their husband is watching TV, they can come in then,” Nix said.

Now that she won’t be tied to the boutique’s hours, Nix said she’ll be able to expand outings for The Posh Cowgirl, including more visits to breweries and wineries in the area. On Feb. 10, she’ll be among the vendors at a Galentine’s Day Pop Up from 2 to 6 p.m. at Buffalo Ridge Brewing in Hartford.

As Posh Boutique winds down, it’s joining The Bridges in celebrating Crazy Days on Friday and Saturday, with merchandise marked down by 40 percent. That discount likely will remain until the store closes, Nix said, noting that she doesn’t need to liquidate inventory because many of the styles will continue to be carried by The Posh Cowgirl.

That includes premium denim brands like 7 For All Mankind, Joe’s and Hudson. The Posh Cowgirl also carries the Wrangler premium fashion line.

Gift cards for Posh Boutique can be used at the store until it closes and then at the warehouse but not in the trailer. Hours for the store until its closing will be 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Nix said operating as a mobile business will give her the flexibility to pursue another one of her interests: event planning.

“Opportunities have been opening up left and right as I made the decision,” she said. “I can freelance myself out to more possibilities while still primarily having my clothing business. That’s what my degree and my passion is.”

She expects to be operating out of the warehouse by the end of March.
