Building permits show 51 percent year-over-year increase

Sioux Falls saw $1 billion in building permits and then surpassed it in November.
The month ended with $1,015,288,719 in permit valuation, to be exact, up from nearly $670 million for the same time last year and $729 million in the same period in 2019.
The largest permits for the month included the city’s new Public Safety Training Center at 4300 E. 60th St. N. for $30.6 million and the new Brixx apartments at Benson and Marion roads at $13.8 million.
A $5.4 million permit came in on the last day of the month for the new Get-N-Go convenience store and gas station at 57th Street and Sycamore Avenue, which also is going to include a car wash. And DGR Engineering received a permit for its new office at Dawley Farm Village for $4.3 million.
All categories of construction are ahead of last year. New commercial construction experienced the biggest jump at $408.1 million, compared with $267.1 million.
Commercial additions and remodeling projects were up substantially, too, totaling $250.1 million, compared with $110.1 million.
New residential construction is at nearly $290 million compared with $233 million last year. That includes 819 new single-family homes, up from 692 last year and 602 in 2019.
Permits for 1,739 multifamily units have been issued through November, up from 1,555 last year and 579 in 2019.
