Busy family’s struggle to eat healthy meals leads to business

Oct. 9, 2019

After struggling to feed their busy family healthy meals every day, a Lennox-area couple decided to start a business to help others avoid the predicament.

Dialed In Nutrition started selling prepared meals in early 2018 and recently expanded into the Sioux Falls area, partnering with businesses to allow customers to pick up online orders or to buy a meal from a grab-and-go refrigerated case. The prepared meals come in four sizes to meet the nutrition needs of different individuals.

“A lot of people ask, ‘How did you get to this point?’ ” said Sara Geelan, who owns the business with her husband, Shea. “It’s kind of funny. We were both working full time, and we have three active kids. Life can be busy, so I asked, ‘How can I as a parent make healthy meals and make it be convenient?’ We made that lifestyle change, and I experimented with different recipes. You can eat healthy, and it will still taste good. Our harshest critics are our children.”

Geelan began making a week’s worth of meals for the family, so they could have convenient, healthy food throughout the day. Co-workers began noticing what the Geelans were having for lunch and started asking her to make meals for them too.

“We’re helping people get their time back. … They work all day and take their children to different activities. Now, they just have to grab a meal and warm it up, and they still have time to spend together as a family.”

To help customers save time, Dialed In Nutrition has several options for them to pick up meals. Ekin Nutrition at 69th Street and Minnesota Avenue and Fitness First of Tea serve as a pickup location for online orders and they have grab-and-go offerings in a refrigerated case. Ekin also stocks frozen burritos. Lava’s Coffee & Cafe in Harrisburg also has a grab-and-go case. Evolve Fitness and gpac, a professional recruiting firm, allow their gym members or employees to order online and have meals delivered to the locations.

Dialed In Nutrition recently revamped its menu to include 12 items. Over a six-week span, customers will be able to order from a half-dozen choices one week and then the other half-dozen the next week.

“I like that it’s not just the same thing every week,” Geelan said.

Four signature meals are available all the time: the top-selling maple mustard chicken, blacked salmon, teriyaki chicken and the beef bowl. There also are breakfast, snack and all-protein choices.

Dialed In Nutrition, which operates out of a commercial kitchen in Lennox that the Geelans built, uses fresh ingredients, she said.

“I do some things that are house-made, too, like seasonings and dressings.”

Prices range from $7 to $10 with no minimum orders or membership required.
