City building activity keeps up surge in June

A few more large building projects were issued permits in June, pushing Sioux Falls’ year-to-date total to $868.5 million.

That’s ahead of $492.2 million for the same time last year. In 2020, it was $286 million.

The increase is because of significant commercial building activity. New commercial permits for the year total $586.4 million, up from $173.5 million for the same time last year.

Major projects that were issued permits in June include two warehouses behind built for future tenants in the area of 62nd Street North and Career Avenue at $10.5 million and $9 million. Graco is adding a link between its two buildings at 3401 N. Fourth Ave. to expand operations, plus other work on-site, totaling $5.8 million, and Avera is expanding Avera on Louise to build out more patient rooms on the fifth floor for $5.3 million.

New residential construction is tracking slightly behind last year at $162.6 million versus $166.5 million. That represents 434 new houses, compared with 475 last year. The city has issued building permits for 1,830 multifamily units so far, compared with 1,031 last year.

Residential additions and remodeling projects are ahead of last year, with permits totaling $43.7 million, compared with $31.7 million last year.
