Co-op to throw block party Saturday

From staff reports

The Co-op Natural Foods is celebrating its neighborhood with a second annual block party Saturday.

The event from 2 to 8 p.m. Aug. 19 in the co-op’s parking lot at 410 W. 18th St. will include food, beer, music, vendors and inflatables for kids.

The deli is making Korean barbecue with local grass-fed meat and a vegan version, and serving it with housemade kimchi, said Patrick Sayler general manager. The crew also will be grilling burgers and brats, and the Breaking Burrito food truck will be there.

The beer tent will sell local brews and 1919 Rootbeer.

Because of limited parking, the co-op is encouraging people to ride a bicycle to the party. As an incentive, those who bike will receive a co-op wooden nickel that’s good for a free beverage, Sayler said.

Musicians include Burlap Wolf King, Dr. Vulgo, The Tinder Box, Elsa Rae and Habius Porpoise.

Vendors include Sewn by Sailor, Hard Times Cigar Box Guitars and Crunchi Cosmetics. Associations for the adjacent neighborhoods, All Saints and Pettigrew Heights, will share a booth to explain their missions, and Dakota Rural Action will have an info booth.

At the co-op’s booth, people can get information about the upcoming changes to the membership structure that take effect Oct. 1.
