Collaboration creates candles that smell like cupcakes

A cupcake bakery and stationery shop have collaborated with a Lennox-area candlemaker to create uniquely scented candles.

Sister companies Oh My Cupcakes and Oh My Word Luxury Paperie are selling small and large versions of the hand-poured, all-natural soy candles made by Johnke Farm Soy Candles.

“We didn’t want a candle that smelled like a lemon,” said Melissa Johnson, who owns Oh My Cupcakes and is a partner in Oh My Word. “We wanted it to smell like our lemon cupcake.”

Candlemaker Jennifer Johnke, who farms with husband Del near Lennox, was able to create what the shops wanted. The line was introduced last week with five cupcake scents – Lemon Drop, Pleasantville, The Marilyn, Cookie Monster and Triple Chocolate Meltdown – and three versions for Oh My Word – Fresh Ink, Clean Cotton Paper and Baking With Grandma.  A sixth cupcake version, Cookie Cutter, was added this week, and Prairie Wildflowers is coming next.

“We’ll definitely do more,” said Johnson, who sees the candles’ ability to evoke inspiration and memories as a great fit with the business’ brands.

While the cupcake-scented candles are meant to be exact matches, the stationery-shop versions are different. What does a candle with the name Fresh Ink smell like? Here’s an excerpt of the description from Oh My Word: “Fresh Ink blends notes of smooth suede, the clean smell of open air, and gives a nod to the writer within all of us. Hemingway would be proud to burn this candle at his writing desk.”

A one-wick candle for $9 burns for 20 to 30 hours, and the two-wick version for $20 burns for 60 to 70 hours, Johnson said. They’re available at the bakery at The Bridges at 57th and the kiosk in The Empire Mall, and at the stationery shop downtown.

Johnke, who started Johnke Farm Soy Candles in 2005, sells her candles online and in boutiques and area Hy-Vee stores, including a couple in Sioux Falls. She also pours candles and adds jewelry to them for a small business that sells on Amazon.

She’s excited about the collaboration with Oh My Cupcakes and Oh My Word.

“I perceive that it will be a lot bigger,” she said.
