Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

Pizza Hut has opened at 2207 W. 12th St. with a site that provides carryout, curbside and delivery service. Hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.

Locally owned boutique Layered Elements has moved into a smaller space with its change in merchandise. It opened in 2020 in The Cascade mixed-use building at Second and Phillips and originally focused on furniture and home decor. Now, it sells women’s clothing, including plus-size merchandise, along with accessories and small gift and home decor items. Its new home is in the former Twisted Sisters Sweetz space at 317 S. Phillips Ave. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

605 Running Co. is moving to a new storefront downtown but will be in a temporary home for a few months. The locally owned running store will move from 124 S. Phillips Ave. to 1020 S. Minnesota Ave. in the first week of September. Its new home will be in the Johnson Building at 225 E. 11th St., and that’s expected to open Dec. 1.

The Johnson Building also will be home to the city’s first cat café. Heather Wendlandt has leased space for Cattitude Cafe. While it will offer a humans-only eating area, for a small fee customers will be able to take their drinks into a separate room where cats available for adoption will be waiting to be caressed and to entertain.

‘Brosia Bowl, a plant-based restaurant, has opened in the Jones421 Building at 421 N. Phillips Ave. The locally owned business is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The menu features a couple of breakfast items and five salads and five grain bowls. Grab-and-go items also are available. The menu will grow to include soups, pasta and paninis, owner Darcy Green said.

Silverstar Car Wash has opened its 11th location in Sioux Falls. The newest site is at 4410 W. Crossroads Place, along 12th Street east of Interstate 29.

Central Payments is spinning out from its Kansas City-based parent company, Central Bank of Kansas City. Venture capital firms led a $30 million equity raise to make it a stand-alone company. It provides low- and moderate-income consumers with payroll cards, prepaid cards and remittances. The Central Payments leadership team, which includes founder Trent Sorbe, remains intact, and a board of directors is expected to be announced shortly.

Kansas-based Chick N Max will open its first Sioux Falls location at Lake Lorraine. Franchise owner Brad Reinke of Pierre bought land for the stand-alone restaurant next to the Hyatt Place hotel. Construction is expected to begin in the fall with an opening in the first quarter of next year. Chicken N Max specializes in almond wood-smoked chicken and wings, chef-crafted sandwiches and fried tenders.

Smith & Smith Co., a wholesale printing business, has expanded its business model to include retail services. Notable Press uses the company’s letterpress to create cards, posters, wedding invitations and other custom work.

Two sisters are out to change the way athletes train and kids play sports, developing a portable interactive wall. Shelley Sandbulte-Timmer and Pam Sandbulte-Meitzler are the founders of PlayOff, which aims to create the world’s first interactive and portable sports performance wall. The portable sports wall stands 6-feet-by-8-feet and is designed for use in a driveway, backyard, field or indoor facility. It pairs with a Bluetooth target and app software and supports a wide range of sports – essentially anything involving a ball.

A Des Moines-based advertising agency has opened an office in downtown Sioux Falls. Flynn Wright is leasing space at 223 S. Phillips Ave. The business was founded in 1984 and has grown into a full-service agency, offering advertising, marketing, public relations, research, video and web development services.

A new Tea business will offer an indoor space for children to play and parents to relax. Tea Play Place will pair a coffee shop for parents and caregivers with an indoor playground created for toddlers and infants. The space will feature tunnels and slides, pretend stations, dress-up clothes and a range of toys. There also will be a section for infants to crawl and play safely away from older children, owner Beth Hintz said. It’s expected to open in late fall and will be open every day except for Tuesdays.

Austin and Megan Klueber have started 605 Snacks, a vending machine company that uses high-tech equipment. The machines have customizable features for each location, including shelf spacing, the distribution system, a UV system that kills bacteria and a laser system “that guarantees you don’t get things stuck in the machine,” Austin Klueber said. The 605 Snacks machines are connected through an app as well, so he’ll be alerted when products are low and need to be restocked.

Avera@Home has reached an agreement to form a joint venture with Kore Cares, a Sioux Falls-based personal care services agency. Avera@Home will transition clients in its personal care services line, as well as some staff, to Kore Cares in several phases starting this fall. The joint venture will do business under the name Kore Cares to provide continuity for clients and referral sources.

Milan Hair Removal plans to open its second Sioux Falls location at Dawley Farm Village in the retail center that includes Kay Jewelers. No timeline has been set for the opening.
