Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

Chef Lance’s on Phillips has opened at Fifth and Phillips. Chef Lance White outgrew the space at Joe Foss Field where he operated the Signature Flight Support cafe and his prepared meal and catering services. The downtown restaurant serves lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday. Prepared-meal customers can pick up their food at the restaurant or continue to have it delivered.

The only dine-in Pizza Hut in Sioux Falls has closed permanently, along with seven other locations across the state. The West 12th Street restaurant closed over the Labor Day weekend. One of three locations in Rapid City closed, along with restaurants in Madison, Brookings, Vermillion, Chamberlain, Spearfish and Box Elder. The Pizza Huts were owned by Kansas-based NPC International, which filed for bankruptcy in July and said it planned to close up to 300 underperforming locations across the U.S.

Boss’ Pizza & Chicken is coming to The Empire Mall, replacing Villa Italian Kitchen. The Sioux Falls-based restaurant plans to open before the end of the month in the mall’s food court. Villa Italian Kitchen never reopened after the mall closed in March because of the pandemic. Boss’ has five locations in South Dakota and one each in Nebraska and North Dakota.

A new retail center being built near 69th and Louise will include Starbucks and Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop. It will be the sixth stand-alone location for the coffee chain in Sioux Falls and the second site here for Capriotti’s. The businesses likely will open in the spring.

The final day for the Pier 1 Imports store on 49th Street is Wednesday. The company filed for bankruptcy in February and sold off its intellectual property to a buyer who will operate Pier 1 as an online store.

A new food truck based in a parking lot at 11th and Duluth specializes in chicken wings and its signature Trap Sauce. Tha Chicken Trap also serves hot dogs, smoked hamburgers, mac and cheese, and fries. It’s typically open on Fridays and Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. until the food is gone, which is often by 5 or 6 p.m.

A mother-daughter team is building a following for their fresh salsas and expanding into pop-up Mexican food stands with the goal of opening a food truck and eventually a restaurant someday. Patricia Burbine and Marcela Salas of Salas Salsas sell their salsas and food at the Brandon Farmers Market. They’re planning to offer online sales for local orders through the winter.

Crumbl Cookies, a growing national chain that features more than 100 rotating flavors, is coming to Sioux Falls. The bakery will be at Empire Place, a development under construction along 41st Street in front of The Empire Mall that will be anchored by Chipotle Mexican Grill and Chick-fil-A. It might be ready to open in spring.

Two seasonal Halloween retailers are open in new locations this year. Spirit Halloween is in a retail center at 41st and Grange where Fareway used to be. Halloween Express has opened at Plaza 41 at 41st and Kiwanis.

A new event hall is coming to the east side of Sioux Falls, possibly as soon as December. The Social is leasing the former Pocket building at 12th and Thompson. The venue will have seating for up to 300 people with a bar and a space for caterers to use. Owner Lynette Hofer, who also owns Open Space, a smaller venue on the south side of the city, plans to organize public events such as live music.

Hyatt Place has opened at Lake Lorraine. It’s the first South Dakota location for the brand. It has 110 rooms, an indoor pool, meeting and event space, fitness and business centers, and a bar with food service.

One year after it was destroyed in a tornado, Tuesday Morning has reopened in Plaza 41 at 41st and Kiwanis. The new store is the latest prototype for Tuesday Morning and features a broad variety of home furnishings, decor, kitchen items, gift items, toys and personal care items. It’s open daily.

Advance Auto Parts has reopened in a new building that replaced its former home, which was destroyed in a tornado in September 2019. It’s open daily at 2601 W. 41st St.

Scott Fiedler, president of Fiedler Insurance, will continue serving the agency’s clients alongside associates Jennifer Strawn and Kristin Hilt. Clients now have access to North Risk’s property and casualty solutions, and its business clients can tap into the firm’s value-added services in areas such as human resources, health and safety.
