Continued S.D. unemployment claims drop by more than 1,000

The number of South Dakotans claiming continued unemployment dropped by about 1,000 people in the most recent report.

It came in at 18,649 for the week ending June 6, down from 19,629 for the week ending May 23.

It’s also down 6,537 from a pandemic high of 25,186 for the week ending May 9.

Continued claims indicate the number of unemployed workers eligible for and receiving benefits after their initial claim.

The Department of Labor and Regulation also processed 857 initial weekly claims for state unemployment during the week of June 14, which is down 208 new claims from the prior week.

A total of $4 million was paid out in state benefits, in addition to $11.5 million paid out in Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation, $762,000 in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance and $215,000 in Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation benefits.

The unemployment insurance trust fund balance June 21 was $96.3 million.
