Creative Spirits opens in new location with new owners

July 6, 2018

Creative Spirits has reopened on West 41st Street with a new owner after moving from downtown Sioux Falls.

Tami Haugen-Lund and her husband, Scott Lund, bought the business June 1 from Sue Boettcher and Barbara Bruns Clayton. It was started in Spirit Lake, Iowa, six years ago, and the owners grew it to six locations.

The Lunds purchased all of the locations except one in Ames, Iowa.

Creative Spirits invites customers to try their hand at painting while socializing. Beer and wine can be brought in.

“We make memories — birthday parties, bachelorette parties, anniversary celebrations, team building, club celebrations and so many other opportunities to gather and spend time together,” Haugen-Lund said.  “We are not just a ‘paint and sip.’ We make parties happen.”

In addition to canvases, the business has expanded to offer painting on boards, wine bottles, mason jars and shiplaps.

“No two pieces are the same, by design,” Haugen-Lund said, adding an instructional approach is used at the events.

“Participants learn techniques they are comfortable using on future projects, and, more importantly, they gain confidence and a ‘creative spirit.’ We have a number of first-time visitors say they can’t paint, draw or aren’t creative. By the end of the party, they are planning their next visit.”

The new location at 1508 W. 41st St. has a redesigned studio that will accommodate new events coming to the business, from StrengthsFinders events to support groups, art shows, a kids club and a “let’s try Pinterest” club.

“We will have the ability to be a full-service venue for parties and be able to offer numerous new opportunities for many more to be ‘creative spirits,’ ” she said. “We are so excited to be expanding a business which has been a part of so many special celebrations already.”
