Dakota Seafood Co. to open this weekend

Dakota Seafood Co. will open Saturday, Dec. 16, in The Bridges at 57th.

The retail and wholesale market is in the former Cleaver’s Market location in the retail center at 57th Street and Western Avenue.

Dave Nielsen owns Dakota Seafood and opened the Rapid City location in 2015.

“We’re thrilled to have an opportunity to deliver the highest quality seafood to both customers and local restaurateurs in and around Sioux Falls,” he said. “I love South Dakota, I love seafood, and we’ve been successful at bringing the two together.”

All seafood is flown in daily and guaranteed to be at the peak of freshness.

The business buys seafood directly from a purveyor’s dock. By creating these relationships with smaller fisheries, Dakota Seafood says its customers can be assured that all seafood is caught using sustainable methods, is in season and is packaged with quality in mind.

“We know who caught it, where they caught it and how they caught it,” Nielsen said.

Customers and local restaurant owners also can call in special orders.

“If it’s in season and available, we will do our best to get it to our doorstep,” Nielsen said.

Travis Petersen is the general manager of the store. He has more than a decade of experience in the grocery business and most recently managed Keller’s Green Grocery. Nathan O’Neal is the assistant manager with responsibility for wholesale business. His background includes experience at a California grocery store focusing on upscale meats and seafood.

“We are all grateful for the incredible response we’ve had since we announced the opening,” O’Neal said. “I’m proud to work for a company that provides customers with anything and everything they desire when it comes to fresh seafood, meat and even fresh produce.”

The store will stock at least 14 varieties of finfish, several types of oysters and at least three species of salmon every day. Dakota Seafood also will stock its shelves with yellowtail and grouper, urchin, three kinds of shrimp, spot prawns, plus the basics such as mussels, clam and tuna.

In addition to seafood, customers can choose from meats including Wagyu beef, elk, caribou and a charcuterie. Dakota Seafood also offers a selection of artisan cheeses, sauces and fresh produce.

A grand opening is scheduled for Jan. 19-21.
