Dart shop moves to Pettigrew Heights storefront

By Jodi Schwan

Glenn Vander Ziel has been in business for more than 30 years. He spent most of them at 724 N. Main Ave.

The property soon will become part of a downtown redevelopment in Uptown that will include new apartments and retail space between Main and Phillips avenues, which meant Vander Ziel needed to find a new space.

He decided to move GDA Dart Services to 802 W. 11th St. It’s close to downtown and to where he lives, and he could afford the rent.

So far, it seems to be – pardon the pun – on target.

“With this new location, the only thing I’m specializing in is dart sales, darts and supplies,” said Vander Ziel, who also used to sell reconditioned appliances. He plans to keep doing limited service work.

He has watched the dart business experience a recent resurgence as new digital dart boards have gained popularity.

“More people are getting into it,” he said. “If you have a smartphone or connect via WiFi, you can play somebody that lives in China or Japan or your brother or friend across town or in another state. They aren’t having to go to the bar to do that.”

He has sold three of the boards in the past week.

Customers can try out products in the store, including newer varieties of darts known for improving scores.

Hours are 3:30 to 7 p.m. weekdays and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.
