Designer finds market for hand-lettered work

April 30, 2018

Sarah Bieber spends much of her day designing at a computer, but when she’s not at work, her creativity comes out by hand.

The owner of Bieber Design produces hand-lettered typography and art prints featuring quotations.

“I’m a graphic designer by trade, so I do a lot with typography, and I’ve always had a passion for letter forms,” said Bieber, who has been a web designer at Click Rain since last year.

“I got into studying the beautiful art of hand-lettering and just started doing it in my free time for fun.”

She listed some of her work for sale on Etsy, “and it started to take off and has just kind of grown from there,” she said.

Her products include everything from Bible verses to quirky quotes. One from the movie “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” is an especially big seller. She has expanded her product line to include mugs, canvas totes, shirts and phone cases.

Balancing the side business with life as mom of a 2-year-old has been tricky, “but I always try to set aside time,” she said. “There’s always a glass of wine at night and me and my notepad.”

Her work will be for sale at the 605 Made Spring Market from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at The First National Bank in Sioux Falls, 101 S. Phillips Ave., which sponsors the event.

“It’s a fantastic event,” Bieber said.

“It’s so great to have an avenue as a local marker and artist where you can get your work out there. The cost is so low. It’s just fantastic. I don’t have a lot of (inventory) to do a whole craft show, and when you’re just starting out, it’s so nice to have something like this. And it’s great for the community to get access to things you can’t necessarily go out and buy in a store.”
