Director of digital marketing turned temporary internship into successful career

April 26, 2022

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Carly Hegstad, director of digital marketing at Lawrence & Schiller.

Name: Carly Hegstad

Age: 30

Hometown: Littleton, Colorado

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

I went to college in Orange City, Iowa, and took an internship at L&S after graduation. I took the internship thinking it would be a temporary gig while my now-husband finished up his last year of college so we could both head to Colorado. Eight years later, I think it goes without saying that I quickly fell in love with this city and this company, and that it was no longer just a “temporary” thing.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

I grew up in Denver, and my husband grew up in a small town in northwest Iowa, so for us, Sioux Falls is a great middle ground. We love the community, the roots we’ve established, and the opportunities we’ve been given and know our children will be given someday soon. Though it would be nice if it wasn’t always so windy.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

The people, the projects and the pace. I’m excited to go to work every day — well mostly every day — because I get to work side by side with people who are passionate about our clients, have pride in our work and make the chaotic pace of agency life incredibly fun.

How did you get connected to your industry?

At first, I wanted to get into design, but I think it’s safe to say I’m not cut out for that! My marketing classes were always my favorite during college, and when I saw a digital position at L&S, I thought it would be a good fit. I haven’t looked back since.

Describe Lawrence & Schiller in three words.

Driven. Innovative. Energizing.

What is something someone might be surprised to learn about you?

That’s a tough one. Those that don’t know me always have a fun reaction when they find out I have identical twin daughters. They just turned 1, and the last year is still a blur. Have we gotten them mixed up yet? Maybe.

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

My husband and I are very involved in our church and the programs it offers to kids/youth. Now as parents, we see even more the importance of instilling strong character at a young age and the value of investing in the future of our youth.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

The OCD in me has to say The Container Store for this one, but the Denver-native in me wants to say Casa Bonita.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

To start, I hope to be less tired in five years when our twins are slightly more self-sufficient. All jokes aside, I’d love to build up the team I have the privilege of working with every day by investing in them and believing in them the same way others invested and believed in me.
