Downtown grocery store closes after one year

Keller’s Green Grocery has closed after 15 months in business.

The grocery store opened in The Carpenter Building, 221 S. Phillips Ave., in August 2016, meeting requests from many in the downtown area for an additional grocery store.

Doors closed Nov. 10 after the day’s business.

“The owners and employees of the store wish to thank everyone in the downtown community for their support and for embracing us as part of your lives.  We will miss you all and feel fortunate for the opportunity we were given,” the owners said in a statement.

Owner Tom Keller said he’s “gutted by the loss” and wishes the business could have pivoted sooner and stronger to find a model that would be viable.

“It can be easy to look at mistakes and second-guess many decisions that were made.  I’m still at that stage.  I hope my emotions evolve to the point where I remember only the joys,” he said.
“I want to thank the crew – especially Travis, Dustin, and Addison – who were there from the beginning and embraced everything we hoped for in customer service.  I know I speak for them when I say that we will miss you all.”

The Keller’s space is a remodeled ballroom on the west end of The Carpenter’s lobby.

It is available for lease through Bender Commercial Real Estate Services.
