Erik Nyberg plans to grow legal career in Sioux Falls

This week’s Up & Comer is Erik Nyberg, a business attorney with Cutler Law Firm.

Name: Erik K. Nyberg

Age: 28

Hometown: Sioux Falls

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

I grew up in Sioux Falls and have always had great pride in the city I call home. I have traveled to many cities in America and even planned on starting a career in Washington, D.C., after living there briefly. After living elsewhere, I came to the realization that the quality of life in Sioux Falls is unmatched and decided to live and start my career in Sioux Falls.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

There is simply no place like Sioux Falls! There is something unique about this city that can’t be found elsewhere. I am extremely proud of what Sioux Falls offers, and it is that same pride that other residents have in our city that makes it fun to live here. I developed many friendships and business contacts while attending Augustana University, and it is those relationships that keep me here. I also stay here because I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Sioux Falls, and I hope to be a part of it.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

As a business attorney, I help clients solve problems so they can develop their businesses. Every day, I get the opportunity to help small businesses grow and evolve. It is rewarding for me to provide small businesses with the necessary legal tools to succeed in today’s business climate.

How did you get connected to your industry?

My path to the legal profession is much different than most attorneys. I grew up in a family-owned business (Nyberg’s Ace Hardware) and quickly understood the challenges that small-business owners face on a day-to-day basis. While I always loved the family business, I never wanted to be labeled as the kid who took it over without ever doing something different. I decided to enroll at the University of South Dakota for my JD/MBA to continue my education and to learn about business from a different perspective. While at law school, I quickly realized I had a passion for business law and helping business owners develop strategies for solving problems.

Describe working at Cutler Law Firm in three words.

Proactive. Challenging. Detailed.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

I cannot wait for the State Theatre to open! I work and live downtown and have become used to not leaving the neighborhood. I cannot wait to grab a bite to eat downtown and walk down the street for a movie afterwards.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I hope to be continuously developing within my profession as well as playing a greater role in developing a vision for the future of Sioux Falls. I also hope to be starting a family with my soon-to-be wife, Caroline Wermers.
