Escape from the house + free child care = win-win for east-side family

Remember February?

The cold? The COVID? The feeling that you really needed to be more active but struggled to leave the house?

That was Miranda Jacobsma, an east-sider with three kids between the age of 1 and 5, who decided to get out more by signing up for a GreatLIFE Golf & Fitness membership earlier this year.

“A friend and I started together because we were stuck at home all the time, especially because of COVID,” she said. “And we found out about child care being included in a family membership — you get two hours of it — so it started where we decided even if we just went and walked, we can have two hours, the kids can have social interaction, and we can too.”

What started as a way for the busy moms to take a  break became a way to get in better shape.

“Eventually, we joined yoga at Woodlake, and then Taz Wilson got me into training, so I work out with him Monday and Wednesday at Performance Center,” Jacobsma said.

“I had never worked out with a trainer, so I was very nervous at first, but it started off well, and now it’s natural. It’s great. I feel like my confidence in the gym has come up quite a bit, and my strength level has increased, which is great to see.”

And the child care that originally attracted her to GreatLIFE has been a big hit with the whole family.

“I love it, and the kids love it,” Jacobsma said. “They get excited to go. They actually ask to go.”

She’s also discovering the broader benefits of a GreatLIFE membership. Families can take advantage of everything from tons of dining discounts to free bowling to entertainment savings.

“I used it to save on our zoo membership for the summer, and I got a discount when I bought new shoes at Fit My Feet,” Jacobsma said. “We also like the Pavilion, and now that it’s getting cold, that’s usually when we go there, and there’s savings there too.”

The family’s experience is a common one – especially this year, said Nick Ovenden, GreatLIFE’s president.

“We’re hearing from a lot of people who know they should be more active, they’re looking for a good, safe way to get out of the house, and they’re discovering everything GreatLIFE offers,” he said.

“It goes back to our mission, which encourages families to spend more time together, so we’re very happy to be serving this family and welcome others looking for a similar experience.”
