Flyboy Donuts is expanding east.
The doughnut shop is opening on 10th Street at Bahnson Avenue in the building that used to be The Flower Mill. The florist moved to a larger nearby space.
It’s a second Sioux Falls store for Flyboy, which opened at 57th Street and Western Avenue in 2013.
“We are looking forward to meeting new customers on the central and east side of Sioux Falls,” Flyboy owner Ben Duenwald said. “We like the easy in and out this location provides. We are also excited about the ability to expand our seating area and have extended hours in the later afternoon.”
Flyboy was convinced to expand after its doughnut truck drew solid business on the east side and customer requests for a store grew.
“The building is going to be very cool. This will be a home run for Flyboy,” said Ryan Tysdal of Van Buskirk Cos., who brokered the deal. “It’s extremely rare to find a freestanding retail building with great street access, located at a stoplight. When I put this building on the market, Flyboy was one of my first calls because I knew it would be perfect for them.”
The building will be renovated with a retro aviation theme on the outside and a vintage diner feel inside.
“We want the feel of the inside to be comfortable, nothing fussy, just like our 57th Street location,” Duenwald said. “You won’t see us buying all sorts of decorations at home decor stores. I’ve already been scanning my family farm for things we can repurpose.”
The plan is to open between mid-April and early May. Hours will be daily starting at 6 a.m. and could go later into the afternoon depending on demand.
Nothing will change at the original location, Duenwald said.
East 10th Street has a long history of attracting restaurants. Scooter’s Coffee and Cluckin’ Good Chicken expanded in the same area last year.
“This spring, a new retail center will break ground next to Jacky’s, which will add even more retail to the area,” Tysdal said. “We expect to be announcing our first tenant for that retail building within weeks.”
East-side Flyboy Donuts fans, your week just got a lot better.
