Food Mama owners to move; business is for sale

Aug. 5, 2021

The owners of Food Mama are moving home to Wisconsin this fall but hope to find someone to buy the food truck business they’ve been building for three summers.

Every weekday for lunch, Joe and Yvonne Garcia sell their “Tejano style with a little Cali twist” tacos, rice bowls, nachos and more from their trailer at 11th Street and Cliff Avenue.

“After much thought, prayer, we felt like it’s time to go home,” Joe Garcia said.

“We’ve been away from home for a little over 15 years.”

They’re planning to operate Food Mama in Wisconsin, likely in Oconomowoc, which is west of Milwaukee, but they’ll start it from scratch if someone wants to buy the entire business or even just the trailer to start a different concept, Garcia said.

Running the business has been more of a hobby for the Garcias, both of whom have full-time jobs, but Food Mama has been growing in its third season.

“It’s been nothing but climbing in business, in clients. … It’s a wonderful location. The people are great. Everyone knows where to come Monday through Friday, 11 to 2.”

Before the move to Wisconsin happens, the addition of evening hours for Food Mama are a possibility, “maybe next month or towards the end,” Garcia said. “If the weather is nice, we’re going to try to run through October.”

If no one takes over the business, Garcia promises that it won’t be gone 100 percent.

“Food Mama would love to make an appearance here once a month so that our friends, people that we’ve grown to love, will be able to say, ‘Yes! Food Mama is here! They’re not gone forever!’ ”
