Whether you’re a baking pro or hoping to one day bring grandma’s specialties to your holiday celebration, one trip to Nyberg’s Ace will take care of all your baking needs this season.

“If you want to bake it, we can get you what you need to make it happen,” said Jody Rasmussen, Nyberg’s Ace corporate adviser for housewares.

“Our housewares department isn’t just the largest in the area, but it has staff who are very knowledgeable. There’s always going to be someone here to help.”

Each of the five Sioux Falls stores has tons of choices to help with everything from holiday baking to gifting. We visited the Nyberg’s Ace on 41st Street just east of Minnesota Avenue and found a huge housewares department with something to inspire the chef in anyone.

Looking for lefse?

We’re all a little Scandinavian when it comes to lefse, right?

But if the idea of making the classic flatbread is a bit intimidating, there’s no reason to fear after a visit here. Nyberg’s Ace is filled with ethnic bakeware and extras – from lefse grills to lefse mix.

And at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 5 and Dec. 10, the secrets to lefse making will be revealed, with a popular annual event featuring the Holy Rollers from Peace Lutheran Church at the Nyberg’s Ace store at 41st and Minnesota.

Offering tips for bakers — and special offers in-store for shoppers — the free seminars are a popular tradition.

“These fill up fast, so make sure and reserve your place now,” Rasmussen advised.

“You’ll learn how to do lefse both with instant and real potatoes, and they will show the art of rolling, the art of flipping, and it’s very interactive. We give away prizes and offer some terrific promotional items. And, of course, there is free sampling.”

Just call 336-6474 to sign up.

Want to broaden your baking even more? Nyberg’s Ace carries a baker for krumkake, the Norwegian waffle cookie, and rosette sets for making the deep-fried pastry.

“We’re definitely seeing younger people learning from the grandparents, and we’re seeing more of them wanting to learn how to do this and pass on the tradition,” Rasumussen said.

Cookies, candy and gadgets galore

Your trip to the Nyberg’s Ace holiday baking place must include browsing the cookie and candy aisles.

You’ll find more than 160 shapes and sizes of cookie cutters, plus tons of cookie sheets, rolling pins and cookie presses.

The candy-making supplies will allow you to create a sugary masterpiece.

“We specialize in Wilton candy-making supplies, and there is a huge selection,” Rasmussen said. “From candy melts to decorating bulbs, dipping tools, flavored oils and candy thermometers, you’ll be inspired just walking down the aisles.”

And then there are the gadgets. Whether you’re looking for the perfect stocking stuffer, the gift for someone who seemingly has everything or a way to perk up your own experience in the kitchen, prepare to be a little overwhelmed.

“There’s a 40-foot aisle of kitchen gadgets, and you’ll be amazed how they can make life easier,” Rasmussen said.

“You can pick up a new cookbook, an apron, oven mitts and even some fun retro gadgets.”

What’s trending

The holiday season is the perfect time to treat yourself to some upgrades in the kitchen or pick out a gift for the chef or baker on your list.

And Rasmussen already is getting a sense for what will be popular items this year.

“We’re seeing lots of interest in crepe makers, griddles are popular this year, and air fryers continue to do well,” she said.

“We also are finding people love our electric casserole pots. They’re very, very light, which makes them easy to transport.”

Other favorite gift ideas include egg cookers and smokeless indoor grills.

“But really, you just need to stop out and visit to see for yourself,” Rasmussen said. “With 20 aisles in our housewares department, you’re absolutely going to find something you’ll want to take home.”
