Home decor, design business opening downtown

Sept. 23, 2019

A new business focusing on home furnishings, decor and ultimately design plans to open downtown.

Taryn Raade and her mother, Heather Herlyn, are the owners of Layered Elements, which has leased space at The Cascade on North Phillips Avenue.

Their store will fill one of the final spots on the first-floor boardwalk, which also includes Severance Brewing Co. and several other retailers planning to open in the coming weeks.

Raade was inspired to pursue interior design after helping her father, Cameron Herlyn, flip houses.

“I just fell in love with that, and at the time I was also working at a boutique, and I loved that too – just the atmosphere of it – so it was something I knew I wanted to do, open my own store.”

Heather Herlyn is a nurse and will continue her career but also has a passion for interior design.

“I know Taryn’s taste and believe wholeheartedly in her and decided to partner with her,” she said.

Layered Elements will be just under 2,000 square feet and carry furniture, pillows, throws, bathroom accessories, rugs, lighting and small gift items.

“Eventually, we want to offer design services and staging services,” Raade said.

They are still honing in on the exact inventory and aesthetic, and will make adjustments based on customer feedback, they said.

“We’re hoping to hit a niche where she can really offer some unique items at an affordable price,” Herlyn said.

Raade will staff the business herself to start. The hope is to be open by Thanksgiving weekend.

“We looked at so many spaces before we landed here,” Herlyn said. “But with downtown booming the way it is, we really enjoyed that. It’s just an attractive space, and we have great neighbors in the retail space. And the other attractive piece is all the residential around us, so we feel like we have a good customer base right at our back door.”

Residents are moving into downtown’s Cascade. Here’s your look inside.
