Howalt+McDowell’s Bill Rezac: Insurance benefits help attract great talent

Bill Rezac is one of the newest members of the team at Howalt+McDowell Insurance, a Marsh & McLennan Agency. As a producer in employee benefits, he brings 15 years of industry experience to this dynamic team.

Name: Bill Rezac

Hometown: Dante, in south-central/southeast South Dakota

Favorite part about Sioux Falls: The small-town feel with the benefits of a big city! We live in a great community that offers my family the resources they need to be successful in the future – we have a great education system, a safe community environment and numerous activities to keep us active and engaged.

Outside of work, I enjoy coaching my sons, Jackson and Mason, in their sporting interests and events. In addition, we are a family that enjoys boating. You will find me on the water in the summer with my wife, Christina, and our boys.

What’s the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is getting to partner with business and offer them the best possible benefits packages to enhance their efforts for attracting, hiring and retaining team members. We have the ability to be a strategic resource in helping our clients grow their business even with the uncertainty that surrounds benefits today.

What would you say is the most common question you get from clients?

“How are employers going to continue to help pay for the large cost of health care for their employees?”

Today’s environment in benefits creates an opportunity for employers to look at alternate resources to provide benefits to their team in a way that allows individuals to feel secure while the employer targets controlling costs and their bottom line.

An exciting part of my job is providing the client options in a different way, so they can look at their benefits packages and determine the key components required to maintain or enhance their current program. I am passionate about finding the right fit for my clients and their employees.

Is there something common that businesses often overlook when it comes to insurance?

Many businesses move through their renewal as a one-year lookout on their employee-benefits program; however, the activity of purchasing insurance should not just be an annual event but more so assessed and reviewed as a risk-mitigation effort for how they can control the expense of insurance and claims over the next five to 10 years.

How would you describe working at Howalt+McDowell?

Innovative and exciting! At Howalt+McDowell, I see and feel passion by all team members on how we, as a team, can assist businesses in addressing the risks that face them on a daily basis. It is an organization that strives to provide clients efficient and effective service in a proactive approach.

Do you find there are any misconceptions about working in insurance?

That insurance is solely an expense. Although a client pays an expense for their benefits program, it is truly an opportunity for firms to be innovative and attract the type of team members they need to grow their business successfully. With increasing health care costs, benefits continue to be an important component to many individuals as they look to join an organization. If the benefits platform offered is attractive, it can be a true competitive advantage for an organization.
