Huset’s Speedway embraces more normalcy as summer racing season kicks into gear

June 11, 2021

Multiple reasons conspired to keep the track at Huset’s Speedway silent for years — but they’re essentially gone now.

First came an ownership change at the track in Brandon, following several seasons without racing.

Then, the COVID-19 pandemic meant a shortened schedule in 2020.

But this year, the speedway has hosted six events so far this season, with almost 20 yet to go.

Huset’s launched its summer season on Mother’s Day, and general manager Doug Johnson said the season has been going well so far.

“It’s huge,” he said. “Being back open after a several-year hiatus, the normality is key for a lot of people. Hopefully, it continues to build and grow to better things down the road. I hope people continue the tradition of bringing their family to Huset’s.”

Tod Quiring purchased the speedway from Chuck Brennan last July, and it held its first event in more than three years last August.

Brennan purchased the speedway in 2015, putting $18 million in upgrades to the venue before closing it after the 2016 racing season.

This season includes 24 nights of racing on the one-third-mile track first opened in 1954.

“We had one week of iffy weather, but overall the crowds and car counts have been good,” Johnson said. “The feedback has also been great, and there’s a lot of little things we’re working on to improve.”

A 4:30 p.m. ribbon-cutting Monday officially will establish the new ownership as members of the Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s key for us to be involved in both the Sioux Falls and Brandon communities,” Johnson said. “We’ve been around for 67 years, and we’re a vital business to the area.”
