Is your student-athlete getting the most out of time at the gym? This camp will help

Many student-athletes head to the gym during the off-season, but often they’re not making the most of their time there.

“A lot of times, kids will come into the gym, start lifting weights, but they go in without a lot of rhyme or reason behind what they’re doing,” said Nate Christensen, fitness leader and sports performance lead at GreatLIFE Golf & Fitness.

“We want to show them the best way to use their time at the gym to work on their sports when they aren’t playing.”

A series of off-season training camps are designed to do that. Aimed at students in middle and high school, they began earlier this year with multisport sessions and now are approaching more sport-specific camps.

“We started out working on general speed and agility, and right now we’re doing a strength and conditioning camp,” Christensen said. “It’s been good. We’ve capped each class at 10, and they all filled up, which allows us to do more advanced work and make sure the coaches can give everyone plenty of attention.”

Here’s when the next four-week camps will start. All are held at Woodlake Athletic Club and mostly last an hour:

  • Basketball: March 12-April 2 at 9 a.m.
  • Baseball/softball: March 19-April 9 at 10 a.m.
  • Football: April 9-30 at 9 a.m.

Trainer Taz Wilson, who also is the quarterback for the Sioux Falls Storm, will lead the basketball and football camps. Trainer Austin Ryan, a certified strength and conditioning specialist, will lead baseball and softball.

“There will be a mix of time in the gym and skill-based drills,” Christensen said. “And the final day will be 90 minutes and include a big-group activity related to the sport.”

The cost for the four-week program is $50 for GreatLIFE members and $75 for nonmembers. Families with multiple children in the camps can receive a 10 percent discount.

What’s ahead

It’s not too soon to be thinking summer! GreatLIFE is finalizing its summer camp lineup, which has some new additions this year.

“We will have two camps going on simultaneously this year,” Christensen said.

“We’ll have a general sports performance camp for all sports and pretty much all ages Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and we’ll have a Tuesday, Thursday camp for advanced athletes where we can get more one-on-one time with the coaches and get in more advanced drills too.”
