Sept. 27, 2022

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Dillon Kober, an associate attorney at Davenport, Evans, Hurwitz & Smith LLP.

Name: Dillon Kober

Age: 27

Hometown: Sleepy Eye, Minnesota

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

My wife and I are both Minnesota natives but moved to South Dakota to attend the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. We moved to Sioux Falls shortly after graduation. I had an opportunity to work in local journalism, and my wife started her career as a nurse. Even when I returned to law school at USD, we decided that Sioux Falls is where we want to live.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

We have fallen in love with the community and everything it has to offer. It is exciting to live in a growing city with seemingly unlimited opportunities. There is always something to do or see, from concerts to the great food. We also look forward to raising a family in Sioux Falls.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

As a new lawyer, a career in the legal profession seems daunting. However, the lawyers at Davenport Evans have provided me with valuable guidance and mentorship as I establish my practice. I enjoy coming to work because every day is an opportunity to learn, meet new people and help individuals navigate complex legal issues.

How did you get connected to your industry?

My previous experience in journalism was a major factor in pursuing a legal career. After several years of covering legal issues happening around South Dakota, I decided that the time was right to enroll in law school. I quickly realized that I had made the right choice.

Describe Davenport Evans in three words.

Experienced, committed and considerate.

What is something someone might be surprised to learn about you?

During college, I took a mission trip to Guatemala to help build homes in remote areas of the country.

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

My wife and I recently joined a new parish in Sioux Falls, so we anticipate giving back to the community through our church.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

REI.

If you had $1 million to start a business, what kind of business would it be?

A pizza shop.
