Kwik Trip picks site for first C-store in South Dakota

Nov. 12, 2021

Wisconsin-based Kwik Trip is expanding into South Dakota with its first convenience store in Brandon and likely more locations to come in the Sioux Falls area.

The family-owned company is buying land on the northwest corner of Holly Boulevard and Heritage Road on the west side of town, said Wade Dumond, Kwik Trip’s real estate development manager. The purchase hasn’t closed yet, so there’s no timeline for construction.

The store will be a Kwik Star, the brand name used in Iowa. Locations in Wisconsin and Minnesota go by the original name.

“It will be a neighborhood grocery and C-store,” Dumond said of the 9,100-square-foot building. “That’s quite a bit bigger than most convenience stores, so that’s why it will be permitted as a neighborhood grocery, which is what we try to be.”

Kwik Star will offer fresh meat, fruits and vegetables, he said. Shoppers will find staple household items in addition to typical C-store merchandise such as automotive products, snacks, cigarettes, beer and other drinks.

Prepared foods are “one of the main things we do,” he said. “We have take-home meals that are hot and ready to go. There’s a full kitchen for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with snacks, burgers, hot dogs, brats, egg rolls and pizza. It’s the normal convenience store offerings but much, much more.”

Kwik Star will carry a full range of fuel and have a single-stall car wash.

Dumond said he is scouting other locations in the area, including in Sioux Falls, Tea and Harrisburg.

The closest Kwik Trip to Sioux Falls is in Worthington, Minnesota, but with almost 800 stores in the region, South Dakotans are familiar with the brand, Dumond said.

“Most people I run across know who we are already.”
