Kwik Trip previews big year ahead — with 3 Kwik Star locations, plans for Harrisburg

Jan. 19, 2023

Within months, Kwik Trip likely will have three Kwik Star convenience stores under construction in the Sioux Falls area — its first in South Dakota.

In addition to two locations in southeast Sioux Falls and one in Brandon, the Wisconsin-based family-owned company is buying land in Harrisburg.

In Sioux Falls, the Wisconsin-based family-owned company has applied for a building permit for a C-store, gas station and car wash at the northwest corner of 57th Street and Graystone Avenue, which is west of Sycamore Avenue.

“Assuming approvals, we hope for that store to open in fall of 2023,” said Steven Wrobel, who works in public relations for Kwik Trip.

At the same time, work will begin on a location in Brandon that was first reported in November 2021 when the company was in the process of buying the land. It’s also expected to open in the fall, Wrobel said.

A third site at 6301 E. 41st St. in Sioux Falls, which is the southeast corner of 41st and Grand Slam Avenue, also is expected to begin construction this year and might be open by the end of the year, he said.

Construction typically takes five months, Kwik Trip’s real estate development manager has said.

Tuesday, the Harrisburg City Council approved a financial agreement to share costs with Kwik Trip for street improvements. The company has a contract to buy land along Willow Street near the new Sanford Health clinic, according to the agreement with the city. The agreement is contingent upon the sale of the land, and the city has to complete the work before October 2025.

Kwik Star is the brand name used in South Dakota, Iowa and Illinois. Locations in Wisconsin and Minnesota go by the original name of Kwik Trip.

The company is known for its “neighborhood grocery” offerings, which include fresh meat, produce and staple household items in addition to typical C-store merchandise such as automotive products, snacks, cigarettes, beer and other drinks.

Kwik Trip has its own dairy and bakery in Wisconsin, roasts its own Karuba coffee beans and is known for the food it makes on-site.
