Lupulin Brewing Co. kicks off opening with three-day party

Aug. 22, 2019

Lupulin Brewing Co. makes its Sioux Falls debut today, and it has a big party planned for the next three days with food trucks, live music and limited releases of its beers.

The Minnesota-based microbrewer bought Hydra Beer Co.’s equipment and took over the lease for its location in a retail center on Shirley Avenue near the Century movie theater.

Pride Neon, painters and other contractors helped Lupulin remodel the space in 10 days, co-founder Jeff Zierdt said. He gives credit to property manager Lloyd Cos. for helping pull the contractors together.

They changed the white ceiling to black and painted the covered beams in the brewery’s signature bright yellow, which represents the lupulin, the yellow powder that is the active ingredient of a hop plant, Zierdt said. Hydra’s throne has been replaced with two easy chairs and a large metal version of its signature hop logo. The windows are filled with Lupulin posters that feature its beers.

“We want to create a unique space that’s compelling to bring people in, that’s warm and vibrant, which the flair of our colors and our marketing, that creates that feeling that says hey, it’s family-friendly, it’s kid-friendly, come in and sample the beers that we’ve got and enjoy and spend time with friends and family.” It’s also dog-friendly, Zierdt noted.

More improvements will be coming, he said.

For the opening, most of the 24 tap lines are filled with Lupulin’s beers and one of its Scribbled Lines sour ales. There’s also a hard cider and a guest offering from WoodGrain Brewing Co. Nonalcoholic options include a nitro cold-press coffee, root beer and a strawberry soda.

Customers will be able to order flights with three or six beers to sample to brewery’s extensive lineup. Lupulin is part of Untapped, an online rating system for craft beer drinkers, so customers can use that information to help make their choices and share what they like, Zierdt said.

The coolers are stocked with four-packs to go of the flagship Hooey, Blissful Ignorance, Apricot Blonde, Javatized and Fruitsmack.

On-site brewing likely won’t begin until mid- to late October, Zierdt said.

Board games and more are stacked in one corner, and taproom manager Mandi Hoermann — who’s staying on from the Hydra team — plans to start a Little Free Library.

For food, there are seven varieties of Roskens Dakota Pizza, meat sticks from Lee’s Meats & Sausages near Tea and seasoned pretzels from Von Hanson’s Snacks out of Becker, Minn. Hoermann worked with the neighboring Ruby Tuesday restaurant on a small menu that customers can order from and then eat in the taproom.

For each day of the soft opening — a grand-opening party will come later — a food truck will begin serving at 4:30 p.m.,  and music will start at 7 p.m.

Hours are 3 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 3 p.m. to midnight Friday, noon to midnight Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
