Massive site work prepares east-side land for development

East-siders: Here’s what happening with the massive amount of dirt being moved by Willow Run Golf Course.

It’s part of a 100-acre development owned by Assam Cos. that’s bounded by Highway 42 on the north, Six Mile Road on the west and 26th Street to the south.

“Right now, what you’re seeing are regional detention ponds being put in,” Sam Assam said. “There’s an enormous amount of water that flows through there. It will be a highly functioning retention pond.”

There actually are two ponds – the larger one was done first and a smaller one is close to being done.

“We’ll start with the development next spring,” said Assam, who is working on hiring an architect. About 70 acres are developable. Most of it is zoned for multifamily housing.

The first construction likely will be rental town homes, Assam said. The plan is to build 12 to 18 of them next year and follow with more traditional apartments.
