McDonald’s new high-tech location opens Thursday

By Jodi Schwan

Get ready to order from a digital kiosk and pay with your phone at the newest McDonald’s to open in Sioux Falls.

The restaurant at 41st Street and Shirley Avenue opens Thursday. It replaces a 1970s-era McDonald’s on the same site.

Inside, customers have the option of ordering from two digital kiosks, which franchisee Rick Lessnau compares to “giant iPads.” The touchscreen kiosks also can be used to customize orders and provide calorie counts for each item.

The outside of the restaurant also has a refreshed look that will be replicated at other McDonald’s around town, starting with the one on West 12th Street in the coming months.

It’s part of McDonald’s modernization strategy, which includes self-ordering kiosks and mobile order-and-pay options. Mobile pay is scheduled to start at the 41st Street location in about a week.

In some markets, the chain is testing delivery service.
