Mexican ice cream shop to offer artisanal flavors, novelty treats

Sept. 8, 2022

A Mexican ice cream shop under construction just west of downtown plans is sharing details about its menu.

El Chamoy will be located at 523 W. 10th and co-owned by Isabel Diaz and Veronica Limon.

Customers will find “many different varieties of artisanal ice cream flavors and novelties,” Limon said. “Not just ice cream.”

They plan to make fruit bars and ice cream bars weekly.

“We don’t produce in large batches to make sure we have the freshest stuff,” Limon said, adding her favorites are strawberries and cream and the mangonada, which is like a mango smoothie with mango, chamoy and tajin.

She’s originally from Mexico and moved to the U.S. at age 12, then moved to Dallas for 11 years after graduating high school in Sioux City. She returned to the Sioux City area 11 years ago and noticed a lack of Mexican treats, she said.

“I noticed the community was growing and I wanted to have a place where every time they had something it would remind them of their towns back in Mexico,” she said. “I also wanted others to try and see what we go crazy for.”

She opened in south Sioux City in early 2017.

“Thanks to the community we survived the pandemic and we are expanding to new areas.” Limon said. “In South Sioux, we have a lot of customers that come from Sioux Falls, and unfortunately, when winter hits it’s not worth risking the drive. We also have customers that live further north. We want them to be able to still enjoy what we have and this new project will be a great start.

Diaz is originally from Dallas and at 22 is looking to grow in a business.

“Her parents will be helping her run this and we are all very excited to start soon,” Limon said.

The building that’s being renovated most recently was 1st Wok Chinese Restaurant. It closed following a fire in late 2018 and the space has been vacant since then.

The hope is to open El Chamoy by early October. During the winter, the business will add other items to keep customers visiting, Limon added.

The hope is that customers will enjoy trying different flavors and combinations of flavors, she said, including tropical fruits and traditional Mexican flavors.

“We want customers to know that our ice cream is made with high-quality products,” she said. “We provide items that are 100 percent vegan and dairy-free, and when it comes to nuts we try our best to keep them as allergen-free as possible.”
