More parents discovering GreatLIFE child care options

Emily Anderson already became interested in joining GreatLIFE Golf & Fitness for a couple of key reasons: It was closer to her home and a better price than her previous gym.

But when she learned the GreatLIFE Performance Center at 69th Street and Southeastern Avenue also offered child care for members, the deal was sealed.

GreatLIFE child care offers a wide variety of activities.

“That was a big part of my decision,” said Anderson, who has four kids age 8 months through 16.

“I definitely wanted child care.”

Now, when Anderson comes for a workout, her two youngest kids head to GreatLIFE child care.

“They like going. They always do activities,” she said. “They’re coloring and doing art projects and physical activities like the climbing wall. One day, they had a big parachute up in the air.”

Lisa Rappana, who runs child care at the Performance Center, said she strives to meet whatever the child needs, whether it’s a diaper change, playtime or quiet rocking time.

“We interact with the children with free play, sing songs, play board games, card games, playdough and put puzzles together. We have art projects every week and special projects like May Day baskets,” she said.

There are similar activities at GreatLIFE Woodlake.

“Many parents don’t realize they have up to two hours a day,” manager Krista Youngberg said. “Many families even just drop off their younger ones and take their older ones in the pool or the basketball court. Our members love that they can just drop the kids off and work on their physical and mental health.”

Child care is available for children 3 months to 12 years for two hours daily while parents use the facilities. Reservations are not accepted.

“Parents are still finding out about us,” Rappana said. “At least once a week, we get a parent in that says, ‘I didn’t even know you were here. This is so nice and convenient.’ Almost every mom says, ‘I’m going to love coming here!’ ”

That’s definitely the case with Anderson.

“I like being able to go and get a good workout in for two hours having the peace of mind the kids are well taken care of and having fun,” she said. “I feel completely comfortable and confident my kids are going to be well taken care of while I’m working out.”

Child care is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Kids also can visit the GreatLIFE KidsZone while in child care if it’s open to take advantage of even more activities.
