New bakery opens in Harrisburg’s 518 Marketplace

July 25, 2019

A longtime deli operator on the Avera McKennan campus is the new baker for the 518 Marketplace in Harrisburg.

Lori Homan’s Family Bakery has replaced Not Just Cupcakes by Jen after owner Jen McVay took over Central Cafe in Hawarden, Iowa.

“Pam (Harris) came up and asked me if I’d be interested in doing some baking, and that’s the part I like to do,” Homan said. Harris started 518 Marketplace last year as a shared space for her business, Emer-GenZ Eats & Treats, and other shops.

For now, Homan is starting slowly, making the baked goods that her deli customers loved until she learns what her new customers want. Homan does her baking at home and stocks a display in the marketplace with a few cookies, bars and other treats. Customers pay for the items at the Gravel Road Blend counter.

Family Treats also takes orders. “Anything that anybody is looking for, I can do that.” Except cakes. She does, however, make decorated cookie cakes.

She ran the deli in Avera Plaza II for 25 years until a little over a year ago when Avera decided it needed more clinic space.

“I was hoping to get into someplace before, and it just didn’t happen.” Instead, she started working in food service for the Harrisburg School District and plans to continue that job with her baking.

The marketplace is open from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday.
