A cutting-edge business approach deserves a headquarters that reflects its modern work.

So when Sioux Falls-based Hegg Cos. began design of the building that would house its new modular construction division in Brandon, the company turned to Interstate Office Products for its workplace-design expertise.

“Our team had had quite a bit of involvement with them through other projects, and we felt they could achieve our vision,” said Jared Vilhauer, vice president of development and finance.

“Our CEO, Paul Hegg, set out to create a welcoming and impactful experience for our team, both for those in manufacturing and in the office.”

Hegg Modular’s modular construction approach will be used both to improve efficiency and quality for clients as well as provide a more controlled, less physically taxing work environment for team members.

The company envisions its facility being used to create hotel rooms or apartments, for instance, that will be built on-site and then transported to their final destination.

“Because it’s a manufacturing space with a real eye on ergonomics, we thought it also was key to continue that in the office space,” Vilhauer said.

The IOP team of account manager Mark Payne and designer Abby Tufvesson helped bring the vision to life.

“As a new building, it was a blank slate,” Tufvesson said. “Red is a signature color for Hegg, so we incorporated that and then designed to reflect their brand standards.”

The two focal points of the building were the shared break room and a statement conference room, Payne said.

“Everything else fell into place around that,” he said. “Abby nailed it from the beginning. She showed a variety of options for the break room that blended well together, and they liked it right away. She did a great job elevating the aesthetic to make it an appealing destination for all team members.”

The break room is a true work cafe, accessible for those who work throughout the building to come together.

“We borrowed a lot of the vision from Hegg’s hospitality background,” Vilhauer said.

“The idea was to make it less like a cafeteria lunch room and more like a dining room or lobby of a hotel, so we brought in a lot of those elements.”

IOP provided a range of seating options, including three tiers – standard, bar height and lounge – plus booth seating and desktop power, allowing space for dining as well as working individually or holding a meeting.

“There are larger tables, coffee tables, comfortable chairs, and overall it creates a very welcoming space for team members to take a break,” Vilhauer said.

“We want them to take time to enjoy themselves, and we’ve also used the space for training and one-on-one connection meetings. It’s accommodating and flexible enough we can use it for a lot.”

Another standout space is Hegg Modular’s main conference room, which overlooks the manufacturing floor.

“When they invite people in to talk about what they do, it’s an impressive place,” Payne said.

A large table is designed with a natural wood top, and the seating is the Steelcase “Think” chair.

“The back is a mesh that pulls in the Hegg red, and then the seat is a full leather,” Tufvesson said.

The space “turned out great,” Vilhauer said. “It’s an opportunity for us to have some quiet space where we can showcase the process and market what we do, but then it also gives us the chance to look directly over the floor and bring the vision to life for potential clients.”

Office staff largely have individual offices, with a few open workspaces.

“It’s all very contemporary but still harkens back to Paul’s vision of incorporating the hospitality elements of Hegg’s culture and background into the employee spaces,” Vilhauer said.

All offices include height-adjustable desks, which reflect Hegg’s commitment to ergonomics.

“To continue with their brand standards, we designed the space to include height-adjustable desks with red shrouded legs versus a standard black or platinum exposed leg. It’s a fun way to use color in an unexpected way,” Tufvesson said. “It definitely gives a nice, elevated design.”

Since the initial team members moved in late last year, feedback has been positive, Vilhauer said.

“We love it,” he said. “It’s a really cool space they pulled together for us. We have a small team out there doing research and development, and as we start to scale up with our first contracts, we’ll be ramping up considerably.”

The intentional design of the space likely will help recruiting too.

“Workspaces like this help attract and retain people,” Payne said. “The whole approach Hegg is taking with modular construction is pro-workforce, and this headquarters absolutely reflects that.”

Working with the IOP team was “fantastic,” Vilhauer said.

“Mark and Abby were very, very responsive,” he said. “They spent a good amount of time curating a vision for us and really listening to what we, and especially Paul, had envisioned for that space. They really did a great job and brought it to life.”
