New national cookie shop coming to Sioux Falls

Aug. 24, 2022

Southeast Sioux Falls will be the first home of a national cookie business that’s coming to town.

Cookie Co. is being franchised by Sarah Storm, who discovered it on Instagram in early 2020 as it was preparing to launch.

“I love business. I love following businesses as they grow, and I love the backstory of growing businesses,” said Storm, who has run her own businesses as a professional photographer, graphic designer and in e-commerce home decor.

“I was fascinated with their store and rooting for this to work.”

Then came the pandemic. The California-based business shifted to launch from the home of founders Elise and Matt Thomas. The flagship storefront opened in August 2020 – with a large social media following already in place.

“The cookies looked amazing, so I was a big cheerleader of theirs for a long time,” Storm said. “One thing I love is it’s all real ingredients. They use real butter, real eggs. They don’t have an egg mixture. We crack all our eggs. It’s not health food, but at least it’s ingredients your body recognizes, and it’s really good.”

Cookie Co. offers oversized chocolate chip cookies daily and three rotating flavors each week. This week’s are frosted sugar, pineapple upside down cake and raspberry cheesecake.

“We had them send us a box of cookies in May, and by the time they shipped, they were four to five days old, and they were still fantastic,” Storm said.

It was enough to convince her to franchise the concept and become one of the first stores in the Midwest. She plans to open in a new retail center on the northeast corner of 69th Street and Cliff Avenue that will include Starbucks and Year Round Brown.

“This location is a fantastic fit for Sarah and Cookie Co.,” said broker Isaac Jorgensen of Bender Commercial Real Estate Services, who represented the business. “With the momentum of development at 69th and Cliff, great complementary neighboring businesses, proximity to schools and homes, it’s a location we fully expect to help Sarah and CookieCo flourish with their first store here in Sioux Falls.”

Storm said she loves that part of town “because you’re able to serve some Harrisburg traffic, and there are some big schools going up around there, Sioux Falls Christian is right there, and I feel like there are not a lot of dessert options on that side of town other than ice cream.”

The store design is “super clean and simple,” she said. “White subway tile with orange tile accents, so really clean and kind of modern.”

The soonest she would open is late this year, but early next year likely is more realistic, she said.

In the meantime, she’s continuing to learn more about the concept, including sampling the cookies fresh for the first time recently during a trip to California.

“They were outstanding. They were so good,” she said. “I think it’s probably the best chocolate chip cookie I’ve ever had.”
