New Watertown development adds Tropical Smoothie Cafe with anchors Lewis, Montgomery’s

Feb. 16, 2023

Tropical Smoothie Cafe is headed to Watertown as part of a growing retail development.

Known as Sinclair Square, the site is being developed by Sinclair Land and Cattle Co., owned by Montgomery’s fourth- and fifth-generation owners Clark and Eric Sinclair in partnership with Crestone Cos.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe will lease the east end of the building with a recently opened Lewis Drug.

The Watertown franchise is owned by Clean Eats LLC, principally owned by Watertown residents Angie Yahne and Russell Warner.

“The first time we ate at Tropical Smoothie, we fell in love with it,” Yahne said. “We serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Sandwiches, wraps, salads, flatbreads, quesadillas and, of course, smoothies. There’s no fried food. It’s a great fast-food alternative to burgers and fries.”

The cafe will offer dine-in eating, a drive-thru, curbside pickup and delivery. Yahne expects a midsummer opening.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe also has locations in Brookings, Rapid City and Spearfish.

The development, which sits between Highway 212 and Jensen Avenue in Watertown, includes a new main entrance for Montgomery’s on Highway 212.

It opened a couple of weeks ago on the same day as Lewis Drug, which was a highly anticipated addition for the community, Montgomery’s president Eric Sinclair said.

“We want to thank our customers in and around the Watertown area for being so diligent in shopping with us,” he said.

“Entering our parking lot during the construction phase has been a challenge for customers and employees alike, so having our main entrance back is a big relief. We also want to thank the city of Watertown for the investment and improvements made to Highway 212.”

Montgomery’s opened in Watertown a decade ago.

Future businesses at Sinclair Square are expected to be announced later this year.
