It’s another big week at JJ’s Wine, Spirits & Cigars, which opens its 3.0 Cocktail Bar and event space this week and will add The Boozy Bakery in the coming days.

Today marked the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting for the expanded retail store that opened two weeks ago along 57th Street west of Western Avenue. So far, it has done brisk business, owner Tom Slattery said.

“After putting in multiple 18-hour days getting ready to open, the initial foot traffic was inspiring,” he said. “We’re hearing a lot of comments on the openness of the space, how easy it is to shop the merchandise and how we’ve created something that is comfortable and inviting and spacious.”

The 3.0 Cocktail Bar already has drawn several curious guests and will open Wednesday. It will offer a few snacks to start and add more food in the coming weeks.

“Food is not our primary concern, but we do know it’s necessary to keep the audience engaged. For our opening, we will have food trucks in the parking lot to offer some food options,” Slattery said.

Director of cocktail culture Paul Squyer has been working diligently “to get the bar set up, create cocktail menus, hire staff and get a feel for the bar,” Slattery added.

Cocktails will rotate frequently and give guests a chance to try products for sale in the retail store.

Some of the drinks that will kick off the lounge include the 3.Old Fashioned, featuring JJ’s Forester single-barrel bourbon, JJ’s bourbon-barrel-aged maple syrup and house-blend aromatic bitters; the Pasqueflower, featuring Glacial Lakes vodka, Rothman & Winter creme de violette, sparkling wine and lemon; and the Death in the Midwest, with JJ’s Tattersall-barreled gin, house-blend aromatic bitters, lime and sugar.

“I try to have something for everyone and everything in the spirit world,” Squyer said. “I have a lot at my disposal here.”

There also will be 16 beers on tap, which can be sold to go in growlers too.

“We’ll have some local favorites, some seasonal favorites and some unique specialty beers from popular breweries,” Slattery said.

The garage doors leading to the patio will be opened as weather allows.

JJ’s also is getting ready to host its first public event in the new building’s event space. It will be a winemaker mixer July 11 featuring Tom Gamble from Gamble Family Vineyards. A free public sampling will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by a ticketed exclusive tasting with heavy appetizers. That event is capped at 70 tickets. For information and tickets, visit the event page.

“If people are interested in booking events or have upcoming weddings and need a rehearsal dinner space, we are taking bookings for summer and fall and into 2019,” Slattery said.

In addition, JJ’s has signed up hundreds of new VIPs since opening the new store. The free VIP program is a popular way to save at JJ’s.

“It takes 30 seconds to collect basic information and we use that as a communication tool for customers to send them emails about what’s new in the store,” Slattery said. “In return, they get discounts off the list price of all our regular bottled items and accumulate rewards to receive future cash discounts.”

JJ’s is getting closer to sharing details about its former space on Western Avenue as well.

A city conditional use permit has been approved to allow the store to sell beer and wine on site.

“So we’ll put in an on-premise program for beer and wine along with package sales and some unique entertainment,” Slattery said.
