Nyberg’s Ace Hardware kicks off major southeast development

April 14, 2022

Nyberg’s Ace Hardware has become the first business to announce plans to locate at a major new development in southeast Sioux Falls.

The store will be part of Harvest Creek on 57th Street near Veterans Parkway.

“It is so exciting. That side of town is just going crazy right now with the number of rooftops,” owner Kevin Nyberg said. “Obviously with the new homes, we’ll be heavy in Grill ‘n Smoke, heavy in lawn and garden and, of course, paint and that type of thing.”

The 25,000-square-foot store will be Nyberg’s sixth in Sioux Falls, not counting Dakota Workwear, which opened last year. Nyberg’s Ace also is opening in Watertown soon.

The year has started off well despite less than favorable weather for outdoor activities, Nyberg said.

“I think the economy, the supply chain, is again going to impact the type of year we’re going to have,” he added. “We’re not seeing major shortage of products, we’re fortunate with our supplier Ace keeping us in stock, so we’re proud of where we’re at with being in stock, and that’s a good feeling.”

He hasn’t set a timeline for the store in southeast Sioux Falls, comparing it to how his family business historically has been out ahead of commercial development.

“I’m kind of proud of it because we’ve been ahead of the curve way back to 1969 when my dad was the first one to purchase — not to build, but to purchase land at 41st and Minnesota … 10th and Sycamore … and then we went out to 41st and Sertoma … so it’s exciting for us to be on the forefront of the part of the city that is expanding, the part of the city that’s growing, and I personally think 57th and Veterans Parkway is going to be phenomenal,” he said.

“When we looked at the map of Sioux Falls, this was really the obvious fit, and driving out there you can see what’s happening on the east side of Highway 100 (Veterans Parkway) and south of 57th.”

Nyberg’s Ace also still owns land for a future store on Louise Avenue south of 85th Street, but there’s a chance the southeast store could go first depending on the pace of surrounding development, he said.

The 200-acre Harvest Creek development is being developed by Empire Homes and will offer a mix of retail, office, multifamily and single-family homes.

“There are over 700 acres of land under development within one mile of Nyberg’s new Ace site,” according to Ryan Tysdal of Van Buskirk Cos., who brokered the deal.

The proposed nearby Sanford Health development and Harmodon Park also will be key, he said, with Harmodon seeing more than 300,000 visits each year because of the ball diamonds there.

“The retail and office portion of Harvest Creek spans over a half-mile along East 57th Street,” said Tysdal, who has the remaining Harvest Creek commercial land listed. “It’s a very high-profile opportunity for restaurants, retail and office users looking for something in this part of Sioux Falls.”

While Nyberg’s Ace is the first land sale in the Harvest Creek development, more announcements are on the way, he said.

“We are currently working with a 10,000-square foot retailer to go next to Ace and will also have a retail center for smaller retail and food tenants,” Tysdal said. “There is also a fast-food outlot on the hard corner of the entrance to the development.”
