Pediatric nurse now makes, sells clothes for kids

Nov. 30, 2022

Tierney Braunagel saw sewing as a fading art and wanted to learn it for herself. Along the way, she found a new passion and started a business to share her work with the world.

“When my oldest daughter was 2-years-old, my mother-in-law, who sews, taught me the basics,” Braunagel said. “From there, I got more and more into it.”

The married mom of two from Tea took to Google and YouTube tutorials for more complex sewing skills. She made clothes for her daughters, and others took notice.

“I’m a part-time pediatric nurse and, at the time, couldn’t see myself stepping away from my career,” she explained.

She kept working part time as her hobby eventually turned into a small business making clothing for boys and girls, from newborn to size 8.

“Patch of Roses features fun, simple, playful children’s clothing for both boys and girls,” she said.

With a lot of encouragement, she started her online business Patch of Roses in October 2020.

“Owning a small business is not for the faint of heart,” she said. “It has grown bigger than I anticipated, which is really fun to see.

“I have just started to push myself out of my comfort zone.”

The 605 Made Holiday Market on Saturday will be her first public appearance as a vendor.

Patch of Roses will be one of about 50 makers with work sold from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the underground parking garage at Cherapa Place. Admission is free.

The market is co-organized by Knotty Gnome Variety & Salvage and SiouxFalls.Business and sponsored by The First National Bank in Sioux Falls and Dow Rummel Village.

Patch of Roses will feature winter clothing such as joggers, sweatshirts, hoodies, matching lounge sets, twirl dresses, an exclusive holiday dinosaur print and other basic pieces featuring both solids and prints.

“Everything is all hand-sewn, handmade and compliant with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to ensure its safety for little kids,” she added.
