Puerto Rican restaurant to close this weekend

Jan. 27, 2022

A Puerto Rican restaurant that opened almost one year ago is going out of business.

The owners of La India Taina, Johanna De Jesus and her daughter, Harianys, shared the news with their customers in a video post on social media.

The last day for the restaurant, which is in a retail center at Cliff Avenue and Benson Road, will be Sunday.

“It’s been a very difficult decision for us and very emotional, but we have determined that due to short staff and operating a business with two people, which is us, obviously is very difficult, especially at this restaurant,” Harianys De Jesus said.

In an interview a little over a year ago as they prepared to open La India Taina, Johanna De Jesus, who was born in Puerto Rico and grew up in Chicago, said it was always her dream to build a restaurant. “I guess my dream has come true.”

The menu featured traditional foods from her homeland, including mofongo, chuletas, arroz con gandules and a variety of fritura.

“We sold my mom’s food and from her magic hands,” Harianys De Jesus said. “People loved it, and I know you guys are gonna miss the delicious food.”

She thanked customers for their support and urged them to be understanding of the two-woman operation in the final days.

“We are definitely going to take as many people as we can and operate as best as we can to give you guys the last best plate of your Puerto Rican food.”

Hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today through Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.
