Raven adds three balloons to Macy’s parade

Nov. 27, 2019

Assuming the weather cooperates, get ready to watch three new creations from Sioux Falls-based Raven Industries in this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Raven has designed and manufactured the iconic balloons for decades. Here’s a look at what’s new this year:

Astronaut Snoopy

Snoopy gets a makeover this year, marking the eighth version of the comic character by Charles M. Schulz to appear in the parade.

This character honors the 50th anniversary of the moon landing and future space missions. The balloon is 49 feet tall, 43 feet long, 29 feet wide and requires 90 handlers.

Green Eggs and Ham

The balloon is 46 feet tall, 51 feet long, 27 feet wide and requires 90 handlers. It’s a debut for the stars of Netflix’s newest show, and they’re riding in a giant “hammobile.”

SpongeBob SquarePants & Gary

It’s the 15th flight by SpongeBob in the parade, and for the first time he’s accompanied by pet snail Gary in honor of his 20th birthday.

The balloon is 44 feet tall, 46 feet long, 36 feet wide and requires 90 handlers.

The parade runs from 9 a.m. to noon. If it’s too windy, though, New York City regulations require the balloons to be grounded.

Assuming the show goes on, you also can watch for returning favorites. Here are some of the other balloons made by Raven in recent years:

  • Chase from Paw Patrol
  • Diary of a Wimpy Kid
  • Goku
  • Illumination Presents Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch
  • Jett by Super Wings
  • Olaf from Disney’s Frozen
  • Pikachu
  • Pillsbury Doughboy
  • Power Rangers Mighty Morphin Red Ranger
  • Ronald McDonald
  • Sinclair’s Dino
  • The Elf on the Shelf
  • Trolls
  • Various smaller balloon shapes, like the iconic Macy’s stars
